During the spring of 1977, the a cappella community at Yale had grown stale and homogeneous. The campus was saturated with the sounds of single-gendered groups. Shelly Lotter and Leslie Lipton, however, had a vision: they wanted to break down the self-imposed barrier which had limited Yale a cappella to one gender or the other, envisioning a group in which the best voices of each chromosome set could sing together in the kind of sophisticated harmony that could only come from a coeducational group of the finest singers Yale had to offer.
Redhot & Blue was born.
Redhot & Blue is Yale's oldest coeducational a cappella group. Though our repertoire has expanded and changed dramatically since then, we remain united in our commitment to pursue the highest standards of musical proficiency. Redhot has garnered critical acclaim at every turn, inclusion in the Best of College A Cappella, and has gained national recognition for our commitment to musical excellence. We've even been hailed as "one of the nation's most consistently excellent mixed collegiate a cappella groups" by the Contemporary A Cappella Society.
Redhot's repertoire consists primarily of jazz, with a few traditional favorites and Broadway standards thrown in for good measure. Whether for yacht clubs on the beaches of Hawaii or the world's ambassadors the embassies of Prague, whether dazzling audiences onboard the Queen Elizabeth II or onstage at Carnegie Hall, a performance by Redhot is sure to convey the passion of its members' love for the music and excellence of their voices. Perhaps the editors of A Cappella Party, The Best of the Ivy League Singing Groups put it best: "The arrangements soar. The Redhot & Blue voices thrive at the soul and the center of the music. To hear them is to believe in this group's special gifts."
