EXPERIENCE SAMPLING OF EMOTIONS AND THEIR REGULATION

One issue with delineating the role of emotion dysfunction in psychopathology is sound measurement for this construct outside the laboratory. A more ecologically valid approach to self-report of emotional episodes and associated reactions is to examine “real-time” personalized responses to emotional events that occur naturally in one’s daily life. We are currently examining the daily emotional reactions and regulation strategies of individuals diagnosed with GAD (with and without MDD) and control individuals in their everyday environments. Using an experience sampling methodology (ESM), individuals are followed over a two week period as they are paged randomly twice throughout the day and at a fixed point once per night and asked to respond to brief online questionnaires.
