Reach Out Curriculum Development

Reach Out understands that while we may spend our summers and spring breaks doing service at the grassroots level, we spend the rest of our time as undergraduates at Yale. So we're working to create a more cohesive program of study for those interested in the many issues of international development. We speak often with administration officials, brainstorming ways to make this idea a reality. For the moment, we invite you to look at our International Development Studies Curriculum Guide online. It can help you find classes you might be interested in taking that are, for the moment, housed in a variety of departments. You can also find hard copies in your Dean’s Office at the beginning of every semester.

Reach Out is continuously seeking to integrate development studies more comprehensibly into the curriculum of Yale College. This is an exciting time as Yale continues to increase the international focus of its curriculum. If you have any ideas, suggestions or want to get involved, feel free to send us an email.

Just because you aren’t going on a trip doesn’t mean you can’t get involved!

Have you been to or taken a class on any of these countries? Do you speak the language? Are you from these places? If you answered YES to any of these questions and you would like to help prepare our trip participants by sharing your stories, insights, language skills or being a resource to the group, let us know.

Preparation for Reach Out trips begins long before the actual trips take place. We work with professors and departments about coordinating classes, lectures, and discussions to prepare students for their time abroad. We watch films, meet with international student groups, attend shows and we are always looking for other creative ways to get a taste of the food, culture and history of the country. With a better understanding of our destination, we hope to be able to make lasting changes in these developing world communities.

In seeking to improve all facets of preparation through written materials, lectures and, in particular, workshops on web design and grant writing, we aim to be a good resource for all undergraduates, not simply those participating in RO programs.

Want to see changes in the Yale undergraduate curriculum?

Share your ideas or even better, come and attend meetings with department chairs, university administration, and professors as we try to voice student opinion on matters relating to development in the Yale curriculum.

The World Fellows Program brings to Yale 16 to 18 accomplished individuals from all over the world each year to broaden international understanding at Yale. As Reach Out, we work with the World Fellows Liaisons to initiate dialogue between undergraduates and the World Fellows in what has proven to be an amazing learning experience for many. These Fellows have been an excellent resource for students interested in international relations, business, government, NGOs, law, health and international issues as diverse as the fellows themselves.

We continue to expand our relationship with this program run through the Yale Center for Globalization. Visit www.yale.edu/worldfellows and also sign-up for the Reach Out panlist and receive weekly information on World Fellows events, the Speaker Series, Master’s Teas and more!

The magazine is a dialogue between different opinions of issues surround the developing world and, in fact, the term development itself. We welcome essays, photos, poems, emails, interviews, reflections and any other form of literature or artwork.
