| - Contraception | YUHS offers a wide ranger of contraceptive methods, including: +Birth Control Pills- $40 for a year's supply +Ortho-Evra Patch- $33.76 for a 4-week cycle +Diaphragm- $35 +Cervical Cap- $85 +Depo Provera- $57.25, one shot lasts 3 months +Intrauterine device (IUD)- $300 In order to obtain a prescription (and a fitting if necessary), make an appointment with a provider in the Ob/Gyn Department (see directory below). If you already have a prescription from an outside provider, you can continue it by having them call the YUHS pharmacy. Check to make sure your medication is on the Yale formulary list. If it is not, YUHS will most likely be able to work with your provider to give you something that, though not the same brand, is similar in hormonal dosage. Insurance Routine appointments and exams are free to every Yale student, even if you have waived the full health insurance and are on YHP Basic. Prescriptions will cost full price, but you can bill it to outside insurance. In this case, only an Rx number and the cost will show up on the bill; the name of the prescription will not. If you have the Yale full plan with prescription coverage, then you pay the first $100 of the prescription and, after that, 20% of the full cost. | - Emergency Contraception | If you have unprotected sex, have forgotten your pills, a condom breaks, a diaphragm slips, or you are sexually assaulted or raped, emergency contraception is available at no cost, regardless of what plan you have. Call YUHS immediately to schedule an appointment within 120 hours of the accident. If you are calling after hours, contact their Emergency Care department (see directory below). If you want emergency contraception in advance, it is possible to obtain EC merely from giving verbal cofirmation of unprotected sex. However, YUHS official policy does not provide advance emergency contraception. For information on how to turn your birth control pills into emergency contraception, click here |

| Important Questions to Ask Before an Abortion: +What, if anything, could show up on a bill my parents would see? Could the dean and master of my college find out? +What do I do if there are complications and I want to talk to someone? +What types of counseling are available both before and after my abotion? +What are the advantages and downsides to mifepristone versus a surgical procedure? +Up until what week can I have an abortion through the local clinics? +What are my options for late-term abortion? +How many procedures are covered under my insurance? Connecticut State Laws: Connecticut has no required waiting period for obtaining an abortion and no parental concent laws. YUHS YUHS does offer abortion as an option through a local Planned Parenthood clinic located at 50 Fitch Street. This alternative is readily available to any pregnant student. The most common method is dilatation and evacuation (D&E). YUHS recomments waiting until the fourth week of pregnancy to ensure the procedure will work. The night before the procedure, you can choose to stay at YUHS, where they take care of you, and then bring you to the clinic in the morning YUHS offers counseling no matter which methos you choose. Someone is available if you have concerns at any point after your abortion. As one anonymous source remarked, "They will go out of their way to help." Mifepristone Mifepristone (RU-486), a.k.a. the abotion pill, is also available upon request. This option is best for early termination of a pregnancy. Insurance Remember, the sooner the better. The earlier your abortion, the safer and less expensive it will be. Also, keep in mind that abortion is only covered under the full plan, and not by YHP Basic. Nothing will show up on insurance, and, most importantly, parents are not allowed to call or agin access to your records in any way without written permission from the student. The procedure is anonymous and your health is looked after every step of the way. Remember that you are not alone. Abortion is the most common surgical procedure in the United States and one that many women experience. |
