OFFICE EQUIPMENT | ComputersIn sleep mode, an Energy Star qualified computer uses 70% less electricity than computers without power management features. If left inactive, these computers enter a low-power mode and use 15 watts or less. Spending a large portion of time in low-power mode not only saves energy, but helps equipment run cooler and last longer. New chip technologies now make power management features more reliable, dependable, and user-friendly than even just a few years ago. A well-designed Energy Star qualified computer will not lose its network connection, which could lead to a loss of data, while in the low-power or sleep mode. Most of the computers that are being manufactured today include a capability to sleep intelligently on a network. For Yale business office use, our IT Department currently recommends Yale Administrative Desktop (YAD) computers by Dell that are low-powered and Energy Star rated. These computers are paired with low-intensity flat screens and have the ability to shut down automatically when not in use. On display in the IT Showroom in 221 Whitney Avenue, you can also view an entire line of energy-efficient Apple computers. The YAD computers also meet the EPEAT (Electronic Product Environmental Assessment Tool) Silver level of certification meaning that the products have been declared by their manufacturers to be in conformance with the environmental performance standard for electronic products - IEEE 1680- 2006. This is great news! By purchasing EPEAT registered products, Yale is helping to promote product design changes that reduce environmental and health impact of electronics throughout the life cycle. To see which computers make the grade, search their registry. Visit the EPEAT website to learn more about what makes a computer greener! Before you make your purchase, check our listing of Energy Star qualifying computers available through our Strategic Vendors, Apple and Dell. Please make your purchases through the Yale ePortal at www.yale.edu/eportal.
