FURNITURE Furniture is an important part of green purchasing. Yale requires any company participating in Yale's RFP process to have a sustainability program and agree to comply with Yale's efforts to be sustainable. DORM FURNITURE Yale has had some great successes in greening furniture purchasing, thanks to the efforts of Buyer Tony Kulikowski. Most notably is his current partnership with University Loft - the company responsible for the new dorm furniture in 1900 rooms around campus over a five year period. University Lofts has an incredible environmental commitment - making furniture out of Havea Brasiliensis (sustainably harvested Rubberwood) from farms that are certified by the Malaysian Timber Council and by the Scientific Certification Systems (SCS) Management program, endorsed by the Forest Stewardship Council and by Friends of the World. This wood is not only a rapidly renewable resource, it has proven to be stronger than Northern Red Oak in independent tests, and it was also LESS EXPENSIVE than any other option for dorm furniture that Tony found.
