Political action
drives political development, and yet, the actor has often gotten
lost in the study of political development in America. We know far
more about the social and economic processes behind political change,
and about the structural, institutional, and cultural factors that
constrain political change, than we do about those who actually
change things. The American Political Development group at Yale
University seeks to redress this imbalance with a conference examining
political actors and their transformative effects. One goal is greater
precision in the various terms used to describe political actors
-- "agents", "entrepreneurs", and "leaders".
Another is a greater appreciation of the different ways in which
they work their will. A third is a clearer understanding of the
range of their political effects. In all, we are after a more full
bodied conception of general development processes.
