Shiru
Wang received her Bachelor’s degree in Political
Science in 1994 from Peking University in China. She proceeded
to continue her studies at the University of Mississippi,
earning a Master’s degree in Comparative Politics.
She is currently a Ph.D. candidate in Political Science
at Yale University. Her research interests include East
Asian politics, democracy and development, elections under
authoritarianism, and local politics of developing countries.
She is currently finishing her dissertation entitled “Village
Elections in China: Grassroots Political Engagement and
Its Consequences.” The project was conducted in
Shandong and Henan provinces in 2005-2006 and involved
a household survey, in-depth interviews, and archival
research. In her dissertation, she explores the issues
of voting behavior and candidacy in Chinese village elections.
She depicts and explains electoral outcome and voters’
assessment of election quality, as well as political implications
of adopting village elections in China.
