The co-educational pistol and rifle teams are composed of dedicated undergraduate students who are interested in competing on the national collegiate level. No previous experience is required. Training and, if necessary, tryouts are held at the beginning of each year. Both teams compete throughout most academic year attending matches at MIT, and the United States Military, Coast Guard, and Merchant Marine Academies, among other institutions. In late winter there is a Sectionals qualifying match for the spring national championships for pistol and rifle. The top ten teams nationally and top 30 individuals in each of the pistol and rifle events qualify for these championships.
The pistol team is composed of both a women's pistol team and an open, or coed, pistol team. We strive to participate in all events of collegiate pistol: Standard pistol, Women's Sport pistol, Women's Air pistol, Air pistol, and Free pistol, the last four of which are Olympic events. Air events use .177-caliber pellets fired at a target 10 meters away. The other events use a .22-caliber bullet fired at targets 25 or 50 meters away (or at reduced targets 50 feet away). Each event consists of 60 shots fired under specific time restraints and the highest possible score in each event is 600.
The smallbore rifle team competes in three-position matches. Shooters fire .22-caliber rifles from the prone, kneeling, and standing (also called offhand) positions at targets 50 feet away. Each position consists of 40 shots and the maximum aggregate score is a 1200. We hope to start an air rifle team in the future.
If interested in competing on either team, please contact the club president.
