The Yale Pistol & Rifle Club, composed of undergraduate and graduate students as well as Yale faculty and staff, provides a venue for interested members of the Yale community to shoot, or learn how to shoot, on a recreational or competitive basis. We are young sportsmen and sportswomen who enjoy a tradition of safe and responsible marksmanship excellence that goes back at least as far as 1882, to the original Gun Club competitions between Yale and Harvard. The club has both pistol and rifle teams competing in collegiate and local events. Notably, our rifle team was the first sport at Yale to become co-educational and offered the first Varsity letter to a woman in 1972.
No previous firearms experience is required to join. We provide necessary safety training, firearms, and shooting advice. Yale undergraduate students, faculty, and staff members are welcome to apply for membership by emailing the club president or simply signing up for our mailing list. Club members can also occasionally compete in local, non-collegiate NRA matches in rifle and pistol.
We practice on a regular basis at the Yale Armory, the Connecticut National Guard Range, and other local ranges, primarily relying on carpools for transport. All practices are supervised by our NRA certified coach and other certified club officers.
We also offer NRA Basic Pistol certification, needed to apply for a pistol permit in most states. **Please note that guns on or in the vicinity of Yale University are strictly forbidden.** You may store your personal firearm at the Yale Armory, pending approval from the club president.
