Graduate Studies - Laptop Program FAQ

Q: You must be kidding, laptops for free? What's the catch?

A: No catch.

Q: How can I connect to the internet?

A: Wireless access points exist throughout campus. You have access priveledges anywhere Yale puts an access point.

Q: But what about at home?

A: You're on your own for that. Options include Yale dial-up, SBC DSL and cable (did I leave off anything?).

Q: What about application software?

A: If you're so inclined, a LINUX image for this machine is available upon request from Yale ITS.

Q: But I want to support Microsoft ....

A: System ships with Windows XP Professional and Office Pro as well as Matlab and Mathematica. You'll want a student edition of Maple, which is available in bookstores or on-line.

Q: I already own a laptop and I don't need another. What should I do with this one?

A: If you already have a laptop, or feel that you will not make good use of this machine, please do not accept the machine. This program is on a shoe-string budget, and we'll be able to put the hardware to good use elsewhere.
