PHYSICS 180a, Fall 2000
Advanced General Physics
COURSE SYLLABUS

Problem Sets:

Most of your progress in mastering the course material will be made by actively solving the problems in the problem sets. Therefore, when doing the problem sets, you are encouraged to discuss the problems with anyone who is interested, including other students, the instructors, and the residential college Math-Science tutors. For the same reason, the use of written solutions for these problems from any source, such as a published solutions manual, materials from other courses (including Physics 180 from previous years) or other universities, and the solution sets prepared by the graders, is not permitted. The solutions which you write up and hand in must be your own work, expressed in your own words.

Problem sets are to be handed in at lecture on Fridays or by 4:00 p.m. in the slot outside SPL 36 (late problem set penalties are described below). They must be stapled and your name printed clearly on the first page. Graded assignments will be returned in the boxes on the 1st floor of Sloane (outside SPL 36) Wednesday morning of the following week.  (Hint:  Put your incoming PS into the slot and not into the return box.)

Questions regarding the grading of individual problems must be addressed to the grader whose initials appear next to the total grade on the first page. Contact information for graders is available on the www page.

Penalty for late problem sets: Problem sets not handed in at the lecture can be handed into the "incoming problem set" box outside SPL 36 without any penalty up to 4:00 PM on the Friday they are due. Problem sets handed in between 4:00 PM Friday and lecture on the following Monday will receive a 20% reduction in grade. There will be an exception to this rule for designated problem sets such as PS#10 (due November 17)which will not be accepted after 4:00 on the due date.  After the end of Monday's lecture, late problem sets will not be accepted and will receive a grade of zero.
