Problem Set 1
due Friday, September 15, 2000
Reading: HRW Chapters 1 -3, 4.1-4.7.
This is a longer assignment than normal since it covers 4 lectures (instead of 3). The problems are generally grouped by the day of the lecture for which the corresponding reading is assigned. For greatest efficiency in mastering the material, it's recommended that you start to work on the assignment as soon as possible after each lecture. It is strongly recommended that you carefully study and understand the reading assignment before attempting the problems, using the problems as a test of your understanding. The excursuses marked E are supposed to be straightforward, and the problems marked P are more challenging.
Wednesday, September 6
Reading: HRW Chapter 1 & 2.
It's OK to largely skim Chapter 1. However, you should study 1.3 (units
and significant figures). The puzzle at the beginning of Chapter 1 (solved
in sample problem 1-4) is cute and a good review of trigonometry.
