Volume One |
|||
|
The debut issue of PALIMPSEST: YALE LITERARY AND ARTS MAGAZINE (ISSN 1543-0200), May 2003, was featured in PRINT MAGAZINE'S REGIONAL DESIGN ANNUAL (2004), chosen from among over twenty thousand entries. Palimpsest's premiere issue consisted of two books of poetry, fiction, and nonfiction; a CD of video and interactive art; another CD of music; and a poster of featured artwork -- all contained in its own cardboard box. Staff members included: founder and editor-in-chief Jung Park (ENGLISH '05); art director Alex Budnitz (GRAPHIC DESIGN '03); managing editor Elisabeth Enenbach (SPANISH '04); and art editor Eric Shiner (HISTORY OF ART '04). |

Volume Two |
|||
|
Published in April 2004, this volume was edited by Amy Reading (AMERICAN STUDIES) and Eric Shiner (ART HISTORY '04), and designed by Emily Lessard (GRAPHIC DESIGN '05) and Willy Wong (GRAPHIC DESIGN '05). Volume Two received special recognition from THE SOCIETY OF PUBLICATION DESIGNERS with a Merit Award in 2005, one of a few chosen from over 7000 entries. Volume two continues the "tradition" of multi-media art with a CD and DVD of music, film, video and digital art, and expands the boundaries of the book with a color postcard placed inside an ephemerally rubberband-bound book of color artwork and literature that literally deconstructs as it opens. |

Volume Three |
|||
|
Published in April 2005, Volume Three gathers the work of over one
hundred faculty and student artists, writers, poets, filmmakers, photographers,
and designers from all corners of the university and beyond. It was
edited by Camilo Gomez (MEDIEVAL STUDIES) and Tom Carruthers (ARCHITECTURE
'05), and designed by Elisabeth Prescott (GRAPHIC DESIGN '05), Will
Martin (ARCHITECTURE '06) and Mathew Ford (ARCHITECTURE '05). This issue
utilizes the collections of the Yale University Art Gallery in an ambitious
computer-aided project with a program named OTTO (short for "automatic").
OTTO made design and placement decisions and juxtaposed Palimpsest's
content with the gallery's collections. Through a varied placement of
the key signature and a shuffling of color signatures, NO TWO MAGAZINES
ARE ALIKE. The magazine contains a DVD with film, digital art and music
and features a poster used as a book cover, all packaged within a (static-free!)
bag. Volume Four |
