Updated 10 August 2003

Outland is a group of/for lesbian, gay, bisexual, transsexual, transgender, queer, and intersexed graduate students at Yale.
We welcome professional school students, faculty, and staff at all our events.
Some professional schools have their own LGBT group. We are not possessive! and we encourage double membership.
Heterosexual allies and people who want to know more about the group are encouraged to join.

How does Outland work?
Outland is quite informal. There are no officers, no meetings to discuss hierarchies or bylaws. We are of course an officially recognized Yale student group and our charter was deposited with the Provost at the end of the Eighties; we renew our registration with the McDougal Center every year, but other than that we are 100% informal and volunteers based.

There are a few volunteers who contribute on a "long term" basis, we call these people Outland leadership because it sounds cool. Being a graduate student group even the "long term" volunteers change every few years, therefore Outland is always in search of new volunteers. If you want to volunteer just step forward. There is no formal way to volunteer. Send us an email and you are in.
In addition to "long term" volunteers, there are volunteers who contribute only for one or two events. Once again we encourage this people to step forward and contact us. We need you too!
Last, but not least, there are people who organize parties or other events at their home or wherever and want to publicize them though Outland's e-mailing list. That's great - we love parties.

What does Outland do? Parties!!
Outlands events include big parties (usually 1st week of September), happy hours, movies, excursions, discussion panels. . .
This way Outland fulfills the fundamental function of providing a way for LGBT people to interact with each other, create a network, to live a fulfilling life and to be acknowledged as LGBT persons.
Given that Outland is entirely reliant on volunteers, it goes through booms and busts in activities. Some years there are tons of events, some years fewer.

Outland's e-mailing list contains events every week. Even when there are no Outland social events, there are academic events organized by the Larry Kramer Initiative (LKI). LKI is made of professors in Lesbian and Gay Studies. Announcements for LKI seminars go through our e-mailing list too.

How to join
There is no formal Outland membership; there is an e-mailing list. You subscribe, choose the event that you like and show up. Have fun!
