Summer Travel on Federal Grants - Important Facts

As we approach the end of semester many faculty are planning research travel outside the United States. Faculty Administrative Burden Survey Published

In 2006 the faculty standing committee of Federal Demonstration Partnership surveyed faculty at the member organizations, including investigators at Yale, about the burdens associated with the management of their federal grants. The results of the survey represent responses by over 6000 faculty members. The  major finding of the survey is that the of the time committed to federally sponsored research 42% is actually spent on administration rather than on research per se.

VA Data Security Requirements
On February 6, 2007 the Deputy Secretary for Health Operations and Management and the Chief Research and Development Officer of the Department of Veterans Affairs issued a memo entitled “Certification by Principal Investigators:  Security Requirements for VA Research Information.”  This memo requires that all Principal Investigators involved in VA research certify compliance with stringent data security measures by April 15, 2007.  The memo is in response to recent incidents of potential data breeches at the VA.

The NIH has issued several reminders to grantees about actions both required of and prohibited to Universities and investigators using NIH funds. These include Vertebrate Animal Research, Continued Ban on NIH Funding of Human Embryo Research, Acknowledgement of Federal Funding and Continued Salary Limitation
