Yale athletes promote fitness, good sportsmanship and the importance of education in the University's free National Youth Sports Program.

University Athletes & City Youths

Yale athletes devote countless hours each year to working with New Haven youths through programs sponsored by the University's Athletics Department.

Every summer for the past six years, over 300 New Haven youths have come to campus for five weeks of sports and education as part of the National Youth Sports Program. Yale's award-winning initiative is a free, full-day camp offering participants instruction in nine different sports, including squash and crew, as well as daily classes on drug abuse prevention, health, math and science. The youngsters also enjoy two free meals a day and join New Haven aldermen and city officials at a weekly barbecue.

The University sponsors four Youth Day programs each year. During the Football, Hockey and Winter Sports Youth Days, city youngsters attend Yale contests on campus and meet with Bulldog athletes and coaches. During Olympic Youth Day, youths participate in sports clinics organized around such themes as teamwork, education, self-worth, confidence and discipline.

The Elementary School Sports Clinic Program seeks to promote friendship, understanding and sportsmanship between urban and suburban schoolchildren by bringing together the 5th- and 6th-grade classes of two elementary schools -- Vincent Mauro in New Haven and West Woods in Hamden -- with Yale athletes and coaches for sports clinics held on campus.

Through the monthly Girls Sports Clinics, New Haven girls age 8 to 16 get the chance to learn about sports and participate in special clinics led by Yale athletes and coaches.

Every other week, University coaches and athletes visit local youth organizations, schools and community groups to talk about college life, athletics and the importance of academics or to demonstrate sports skills. Yale athletes also serve as hosts to New Haven youngsters at the annual
Walter Camp Foundation's "Stay in School" rally, which features players from the National Football League talking about the importance of education.

The Yale Athletics Department sponsors an annual Sports Equipment Drive for local schools and youth organizations.

Yale athletes also make weekly visits to the children being treated at Yale-New Haven Hospital, and serve as mentors to students in the New Haven Public Schools.
