David Everett Chantler Prize

The David Everett Chantler Award goes to the senior who best exemplifies the qualities of courage, strength of character and high moral purpose that were characteristic of the life of Mr. Chantler, Class of 1910.

The awards committee chose two outstanding candidates this year. They are Henry Fernaine of Timothy Dwight College and Sonya "Sunny" Gettinger of Trumbull College. The award was presented by Stanton Wheeler, the Ford Foundation Professor of Law and Social Sciences, master of Morse College and chair of the Council of Masters' Committee on Awards. His remarks follow:

Henry Fernaine

In his four years at Yale, Henry Fernaine has transformed himself from a shy person utterly afraid to cross social boundaries, especially inter-generational ones, into a multi-faceted student leader reaching into every corner of residential college life. Henry has become a radiantly sharing, concerned, moral paragon of the college -- an ideal recipient of the David Everett Chantler Award.

Sonya Gettinger

Sunny Gettinger has been described as "an architect of community" whose spirit is a source of support to her entire class in Trumbull. Sunny's high moral conviction and sustained quotidian courage have come no doubt from a family that rises to all challenges together. From them she has learned the power of support for every member of a community, and she has generously bestowed her spirit to the larger community of Yale.
