SCHOLAR Campus Life

One of the most important components of SCHOLAR is residential life. While students go home on Friday evenings and return to campus Sunday evening, each of them has the opportunity to experience college life, get to know other students and learn how to live in a group. Students often report at the program’s end that living on campus eliminated their fear of going to college and gave them confidence to venture out socially and academically. (49 % of SCHOLAR students will be the first in family to go to college)
"The New Haven Public Schools and Yale University are both institutions dedicated to education and the development of human potential. As neighbors, we have much to offer each other and much we can do together to promote the vitality of the city of New Haven which is our home."
Richard C. Levin

Yale University
Residential Advisors are a cornerstone of the SCHOLAR program; their role cannot be overstated. Yale undergraduates are recruited in the spring; they are carefully screened for their love of and abilities in science, diversity of talent, enthusiasm, ability to communicate, and an interest in mentoring New Haven high school students. RAs live with the students on campus. They serve as mentors and role models, attend class with the students, assist with homework, and plan all blocks of time not filled with academics and enrichment activities. RAs consistently report that living and working with SCHOLAR students provided a life-changing experience.
Students report similar experiences. According to program evaluations, SCHOLAR’s exposure to learning outside the traditional classroom setting, fortifies and reinforces academic goals, encourages high standards, enables students to envision themselves on a college campus, builds confidence, encourages problem-solving, helps them learn to live with others, and creates a community of learners across academic class at Career HS.
Graduate and Undergraduate students at Yale University may apply for a job in S.C.H.O.L.A.R.
