SCHOLAR Academic Program
In 2008, SCHOLAR celebrated its the 10th anniversary with 47 As in previous years, sophomores, juniors and seniors study biology, chemistry and biotechnology respectively. In addition, staff added a physics component for sophomores, which was exceptionally well-received by the students.
To supplement the daily 3-hour science curriculum, all students also take interdisciplinary courses, taught by masters candidates in the Yale Urban Teaching program. This year, these teachers-in-training designed their courses according to their areas of expertise; hence, students were offered a nugget of history, Spanish culture, African literature, and discrete mathematics.
A core component of SCHOLAR is the senior writing seminar during which students focus on the college application process. At the end of the program, seniors have completed one college essay, are familiar with the common application, know how to search for financial aid opportunities, and in general, have a better understanding of the college application process.
The SCHOLAR program is a rigorous one, with students in class six hours daily, Monday through Thursday. Homework is an integral part of each day and students spend one to three hours working individually and in groups to complete assignments. They are supported by the residential advisors who attend class with them and have expertise in science.
