Affordable homeownership helps neighborhoods retain prospering families, support existing residents, and attract new residents. To encourage increased homeownership, Yale University, under the leadership of President Richard C. Levin established the Yale Homebuyer Program in 1994. The program offers Yale employees $25,000 to purchase a home in several neighborhoods. To date, Yale has aided more than 830 employees with their purchases. Of these homeowners, half are minorities and the majority of them are first-time homebuyers. The Yale Homebuyer Program has had a marked impact on the number of home purchases in New Haven.
