A strong economic base to provide jobs and tax revenue is essential for a strong community. Yale University helps achieve this goal by contributing to economic development in New Haven. It is one of the world's leading centers for life sciences research.

Discoveries in Yale laboratories have spawned 40 start-up companies in the Greater New Haven area. These new companies have not only brought new jobs and taxes to the City but have also attracted more than $3 billion in private capital investment to the New Haven region. Most importantly, these companies are finding new treatments to improve human health.

Many of the biotech businesses in New Haven have found homes at 300 George Street and Science Park, two developments that sat vacant throughout much of the 1990's. Having undergone tremendous renovations these buildings have been able to attract a growing number of firms interested in New Haven.

Yale's work is complemented by a robust private sector, including major divisions of Bayer, Bristol-Myers Squibb, Pfizer, and Boehringer Ingleheim nearby. In fact, Pfizer, one of the world's largest drug companies, constructed a new research center adjacent to the School of Medicine in downtown New Haven. Pfizer's decision to locate in New Haven is largely related to the sophistication of medical imaging research at Yale.

Yale University has also responded to the tremendous growth in research activity at the School of Medicine by constructing a state-of-the-art facility at 300 Congress Avenue, which provides 450,000 square feet of much needed research space, an increase of 25% at the School of Medicine.
