Exciting News from the Statlab

The Social Science Statistical Laboratory (Statlab) provides specialized resources for teaching, research, and statistical analysis for faculty and students. Its high quality consulting services on statistical software, research design, and data management have made it a primary focus for Social Science Computing at Yale. Equipment, hours, and resources have been expanded in the following ways:
New equipment:
Twenty-four new Pentiums arrived in August and are now up and running the wealth of Statlab statistical software. Most of the software has been upgraded to Windows versions, providing better interfaces and faster computing. Two new Pentiums are also being added to the public cluster at Computing and Information Services (175 Whitney) that will be connected to the Statlab network and present the same software as the machines in the Statlab itself.
New Internet WWW site:
Check out the Statlab's home page at: <http://statlab.stat.yale.edu>.;You will find information about the Statlab's hours, services, and software. Of special interest is the new Social Science Data Archive component which allows you to search for data holdings and browse help files about accessing the data on Yalevm and the Statlab networks. The site also links you to international social science resources and information networks.
New online database:
The Current Index to Statistics from the Social Science Library and Information Services (SSLIS) has been put on the Internet (restricted to Yale accounts). The Statlab adapted the CD-ROM database to the WWW. It is available on the Statlab and SSLIS home pages.
New databases on the Statlab network:
Social science data files that historically were available only on the mainframe are being moved to the Statlab network. Subjects cover international economics, public opinion surveys, census data, and election studies. Contact Ann Green for more information (statann@yalevm.cis.yale.edu) .
New hours:
The Statlab will open at 9:30 in the morning instead of 10:00. We are open 9:30 AM to 10 PM Monday through Thursday, 9:30 AM to 5:30 PM Friday, and from 1:00 to 5:30 on Saturdays and Sundays.
New consultants:
Every year the Statlab welcomes new graduate student consultants to its staff. This year, we have two new economists (Ramzi Zein and Biao Lu) and a new psychologist (Martin Dennis). They join Elena Grigorenko (Psychology), Soo Yeon Kim (Political Science), Scott Redenius (Economics), and Trin Xie (Statistics).
Access by phone or e-mail:
The Statlab phone number is 432-3277. Consultants are normally available during all open hours. E-mail for questions that involve mainframe computing may be directed to <CONSULT@YALEVM>.The Statlab is located on the 1st floor at 140 Prospect Street in the same building as the Social Science Library and the Department of Sociology.
