Network connections have become as much a part of computing as RAM or hard drives... with the difference that they are somewhat more confusing that either of these. However, we at the MCSC are happy to help eliminate part of this confusion. Persons desiring either a direct network connection via ethernet, or dial-in connections to university services such as Apple Remote Access or PPP can now feel confident of having just the modems and cards they need quickly available through the Microcenter.
The MCSC is committed to carrying cost-effective modems and ethernet hardware, which have been specifically tested and approved for Yale network and dial-in services. Ethernet cards and high-speed modems are not entirely generic in their operation, and the approval process provides you with both a good connection and support personnel with experience in the modem or card which you have purchased.
The MCSC is also committed to keeping these crucial cards and modems in stock and available via next-day delivery (departments only) or immediate purchase at 175 Whitney Counter Sales (all purchasers). (See related article on accessing MCSC in-stock information via WWW.)
As of press time, the MCSC carries both ethernet cards and high-speed (28.8) modems for Macs and PCs, desktops and laptops (PCMCIA). These include the modems desired by the central Data Network Operations ARA and PPP users; and we are also working with Medical Area MAS to provide just what will be needed for the new Medical area dial-in services as well. So wherever you are on the Yale campus...we have just what youÕre looking for.
With changes in the computer world, it is sometimes hard to plan... by the time the equipment arrives, Product X may no longer be the best buy for the money (and, frankly, who wants to wait?). To combat this problem the MCSC makes great efforts to keep current "best buys" on hand for our university customer base.
However, our stock does little good unless you, our valued customers, know what we have available! In order to aid customers in their planning, as of March 1st the MCSC will be allowing the Yale Community to access our list of in-stock products via the World-Wide-Web. The new forms-based Web page will be accessible at the URL:
<http://www.yale.edu/mcsc/availability>The products listed include MCSC Apple, DEC, IBM, and HP offerings, as well as key software and hardware from our Counter sales unit. Please note that this availability information is being provided as a trial service to the Yale Community, with the understanding that posted availability, though updated continually, should be taken as a guideline only. Customers should still get "hard" confirmation of availability via a phone call to the MCSC showrooms before placing orders contingent on availability, or before traveling to Whitney Avenue for instant pickups. As always, orders for equipment requiring special configuration (such as additional memory) are not available for immediate pickup!
The Microcomputer Support Center announces the availability of Microsoft Open License Pak, a volume license program for Microsoft software for use on institutionally owned computers. The Microsoft Open License Pack (MOLP) program provides low prices with modest quantity commitments. Here are a few key advantages of the program:
MOLP provides departments with the right to copy the software only. Media and documentation need to be purchased separately. MOLP participants are entitled to the same 90 day support for new product purchases as are purchasers of standard single units.
