New Mapping Programs at the Yale Map Collection

The Yale Map Collection has two new CD-ROM computerized mapping programs: MapExpert and Global Explorer.

The MapExpert is a nation-wide computerized mapping program. The program includes over twelve million street segments and 1.1 million geographic and man-made features. The program contains 646 MB of data, and runs on a CD-ROM drive using Windows, version 3.1.

A user can:

*locate an area by Place Name

*locate a Street

*locate an area using the Zip Code

*locate an area using Telephone

Area Code and Exchange

*locate specific blocks on a city street by Address

*locate a specific Longitude and Latitude

*identify base map features such as streets, railroads, boundaries, and rivers.

*create Overlays such as Map Notes, lines, fills, text, symbols, highlights, and cartographic features added to the base map, such as roads, water, islands, or power lines

*link maps--this allows the user to link two maps so that they have the same center coordinates

*calculate the distance between two points and the accumulated distance between a series of points.

High quality maps can be printed directly from the program. Mural maps (wall-sized maps printed in segments) may also be printed.

The Global Explorer is a computerized map of the entire globe. The program runs on a CD-ROM drive using Windows version 3.1.

The following functions are available:

*The Gazeteer Interface Function allows the user to locate places and points of interest from around the globe, accompanied by text descriptions. The user may also search by Category, locating geographic areas by specific subject interest, such as Historic Buildings, Important Libraries, Primitive Art, Burial Sites, etc. The gazeteer also includes individual Country Profiles for the following categories: Population, Government, Economy, Health, Geography, Military, Communication Networks, and Wildlife.

*The Streets Find Interface allows the user to locate and highlight street names of one hundred important cities worldwide.

*The Airnet Interface allows the user to measure the distance of commercial air routes throughout the world. Calculations are given in miles and kilometers. The complete route, with black lines indicating air travel, is displayed.

The Global Explorer maps, but not the text descriptions, can be printed.
