Not Attending OIS?

For those of you participating in other programs or arriving on campus on Friday you can find international arrival information on our Web site. The Practical Matters section of our Web site will help you settle in once you arrive in New Haven. And of course you will have the information about Opening Days which will be sent early this summer by the Yale College Dean’s Office and will be accessible online in mid July.

To help get you pointed in the right direction once on campus, and to meet other international freshmen, we ask you to attend a brief orientation on Friday, August 24th, from 2-3 p.m. at OISS. Please bring:

  • your passport
  • I-20
  • I-94 card (little white card stapled in your passport)

OISS needs to check your immigration documents to be sure your arrival was noted correctly by immigration and we need to register you in the government data base SEVIS. This fulfills a government requirement.

This session will also provide you with an overview of the things you need to remember as an international student studying in the U.S. including travel preparedness and the various kinds of authorization to work in the U.S. you may be eligible to engage in as an F-1 student. Please try to attend this meeting.

International students receiving financial aid from Yale will also want to plan to attend the Financial Aid Session for International Students, earlier in the day on August 24 at 10 a.m., in LC101 on Old Campus. Diane Frey, director of Student Financial Services, will give an overview of how your aid package will be disbursed, discuss tax issues and answer student questions.

Immediately following, you may want to attend the Student Employment Session for International Students, August 24 at 11 a.m., in LC101 on Old Campus. Heather Abati, Student Employment Coordinator will present an overview of student employment options and how to apply. OISS staff will talk about immigration eligibility for employment and OIS counselors will share their experiences.
