A visa is a document stamped in your passport that gives you permission to apply to enter the U.S. A valid visa allows you to apply at a U.S. port of entry for admission into the U.S. It does not govern how long you can remain. This is determined by a U.S. immigration officer of the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) who decides whether to allow you to enter and how long you can stay for any particular visit. Your U.S. visa is issued for a certain period of time and permits either one, two or multiple entries during its validity.
Your passport, issued by your country of citizenship, should be kept valid at least six months into the future. If you do not have a passport, or if you need to renew your passport, you should contact your home government authorities and begin this process immediately.
Use the links in the right-hand column to find information about applying for the visa that is right for you. If you still have questions about the visa application process, don't hesitate to contact OISS at newstudents.oiss@yale.edu.
