Getting a Yale ID

Yale ID’s (identification cards) are issued to all students, visiting scholars and their spouses or domestic partners (same sex only) and can be obtained at the Yale ID center. Bring a photo ID when you go, as well as an "Authorization to Issue ID Card" (issued by OISS or your Department Registrar), and if possible bring along your Net ID or Yale system ID number to facilitate the process.

If you have trouble at the ID center and/or do not appear to be in Yale’s computer system, contact your school or department for assistance.

A Yale ID will give you university privileges, such as library services and use of the Yale shuttle, and may entitle you to discounts at local businesses. Get in the habit of asking, “Do you offer a Yale discount?” It is recommended that you carry your Yale ID at all times.

Lost, stolen or damaged ID cards should be reported immediately to the Security Department, 100 Church Street South, 785-5555. Go to the ID Center to get a replacement card ($20 fee), or if closed, you can get a temporary card at the University Police Department at Phelps gate.

New students can pick up the ID at their college or school if arranged prior to arrival. Otherwise, visit the ID center. Lines can be quite long in September.

Short term visitors to Yale may or may not receive an ID card. The hosting department can assist with the issuance of a visitor’s card.

Spouses and partners ID’s are usually not available at the start of the academic year. To obtain one, proof of marriage is required as described in detail on the ID center Web site. Same sex domestic partners must show proof of civil union or marriage.

Unmarried opposite-sex partners and children of students or scholars are not eligible to receive a Yale ID, but are entitled to certain Yale services and privileges including a shuttle bus guest pass, a Yale discount card, gym membership (with a fee) and more. See the Graduate School Web site for more details.
