It is extremely important that all international visitors to the U.S. have adequate health insurance coverage. If someone without health insurance becomes ill, they would not be entitled to any free health care and would be personally responsible for all costs incurred. For a serious illness or accident in particular, this could cause great hardship.
All full-time Yale degree candidates are required to have adequate hospitalization and specialty care medical coverage and will be automatically enrolled in Yale Health Plan. J-1 and J-2 visitors must meet a minimum health insurance requirement, which is described later on in this section. All dependents must have coverage, and if you have friends or relatives who are coming to visit as tourists, even for a short time, it is imperative that they at least have accident insurance while they are here.
