Taxes

The tax filing deadline this year is Wednesday, April 15, 2009.

All international students and scholars who were in the U.S. for any period of time during 2008 must file an annual tax statement, called an income tax return, with the federal government. In addition, some students and scholars will also be required to file an income tax return with the state of Connecticut. This Web site is intended to help you with your filing obligations.

Meet with the International Tax Office at Yale

If you will receive payment from Yale, including stipends, fellowships, wages, etc., it is important to meet with the Yale University International Tax Office before receiving the first paycheck.

Collect Your Tax Documents

W-2 Form

You will receive a W-2 form (Statement of wages/income) from each of your 2008 U.S. employers. If you received wages or salary from Yale, you can obtain a copy from Yale's payroll Web site:

1042-S Form

If you received a scholarship or fellowship, or if you had wages that were exempt from federal taxes because of a tax treaty, you will receive a 1042-S form. This form is required to file your tax return. You may also receive more than one 1042-S form listing different sources of income.

Some of you will receive both a W-2 and a 1042-S form(s). You must have all of these income statement documents before you can file your income tax return(s). If you do not receive these forms or have moved away, please contact payroll.taxforms@yale.edu.

CINTAX Tax Preparation Software

OISS will make available to all Yale international students and scholars a Web-based tax preparation program called CINTAX. Students and scholars can access the system using a password provided by OISS. Click here for more information about CINTAX.
