New Mumbai U.S. Consulate To Open Later in 2011

H and L Interviews Limited in Meantime

A new U.S. Consulate is being constructed for Mumbai and is scheduled to open later in 2011. No new H and L appointments are being made at the current Mumbai Consulate, which has limited interview capabilities due to aging infrastructure. New H and L interviews may be scheduled at other U.S. Consulates in India or at the U.S. Embassy in New Delhi. [More information.]

Relief for Japan and Other Nationals from the Pacific Stranded due to the Earthquakes and Tsunami

This advisory is for Japanese and other foreign nationals from the Pacific stranded in the United States due to the earthquakes and tsunami devastation in the Pacific. If you have exceeded or are about to exceed your authorized stay in the U.S. you may be permitted up to an additional 30 days to depart.

Partial Reduction in Visa Operations
at U.S. Consulate General in Mumbai

The U.S. Consulate General in Mumbai, India, has announced a partial reduction in visa operations due to construction. Effective March 7, 2011, new appointments for H and L visas are no longer available in Mumbai. Instead, appointments must be scheduled at the consulates in New Delhi, Chennai, or Hyderabad. Those who already have appointments scheduled at Mumbai will not need to reschedule. [Learn More...]

H-1B Advanced Degree Cap Exhausted

As of December 31, 2010, USCIS received 57,300 cases against the 65,000 standard H-1B cap visa and reached the 20,000 cap for individuals with U.S. advanced degrees on December 24, 2010.

Standard H-1B numbers remain available at this time, but the cap exemption for U.S. advanced degree holders is exhausted. As a result, the petitions for individuals with U.S. advanced degrees will be counted against the standard 65,000 cap resulting in an uptick for the standard cap. [Learn More...]
