J-1 Student Intern
Yale University, through the Office of International Students and Scholars (OISS), now has permission from the U.S. Department of State to sponsor student interns under its J-1 Exchange Visitor program. Participants may be engaged in an internship program up to a maximum period of 12 months per degree or major.
To qualify as eligible for the Student Intern program, the participant must be:
- Currently enrolled and in good academic standing at an accredited postsecondary academic institution outside the US.
- Fulfilling educational objectives for current degree program outside the US.
- Able to verify English language skills sufficient to function on a day to day basis in the program.
- Primarily in the U.S. to engage in the student internship program
- Returning to the home institution upon completion of the internship program.
- Able to show sufficient funding to support their visit, including housing and living expenses.
Intern sponsors must:
- Complete normal paperwork for J visa sponsorship, i.e. OISS notification form as well as Form DS-7002 for submission to OISS.
- Verify the student’s English language ability.
- Confirm that the internship program consists of a minimum of 32 hours per week.
- Confirm that the internship will include no more than 20% clerical work.
- Mentor the intern, including exposing participant to American techniques, methodologies and technology as well as expanding upon the participant’s existing knowledge and skills.
- Provide OISS with a written evaluation of the intern’s performance within 15 days of the conclusion of the training period, including the number of hours, type of training and an overall evaluation of the performance. For programs lasting more than 6 months a midpoint evaluation is also required within 15 days of the 6 month mark.
Process
- Complete and submit OISS notification form.
- Complete Form DS-7002.
- Department will need to complete and sign the Form DS-7002, send it to the student (FAX) to review, sign and return to the department. (Faxed copies are acceptable.)
- Once fully completed Form DS-7002 can be submitted to OISS.
- Complete Departmental Attestation and provide evidence of medical insurance for the duration of the internship and forward this information to the OISS.
- Once OISS receives forms noted in 1, 2 and 3 as well as other supporting documents, we will generate the DS-2019 visa document, along with the final Form DS-7002, to enable the student to apply for a J-1 visa.
