U.S. immigration regulations require that Yale verify and document adequate funding arrangements for all incoming scholars.
Yale has set a minimum of $2100/month for an individual and an additional $625/month for an accompanying spouse and $417/month for each accompanying child. In all instances the minimum level of funding must be met before a visa document can be issued. In addition, all scholars and any accompanying dependents must have health insurance coverage.
Funding sources typically fall into the following categories:
Yale University Funds
Government Funds
Other Organization Funds
Personal Funds
In addition to the set minimum, funding support varies based on the visa type and the appointment title your scholar will be coming to Yale under.
For the academic year 2013-2014, the first year minimum is $39,264.

The only exception is if the Postgraduate Fellow is a visiting student in the Yale School of Medicine, i.e. a masters degree, medical, and doctoral student from other institutions invited by a YSM faculty member to spend up to several months in their labs as part of their education. These individuals are permitted to fund their stays with personal funds.

There is no employment relationship between a VSR and Yale. A VSR may receive a stipend directly from their home institution, or receive other fellowship support. Support through Yale administered funds is permissible only when it is provided as a stipend to support an educational experience (e.g. under provisions of an NSF REU Supplement). The minimum funding level is $2100/month.
H-1B Visa or O-1 Visa
H-1B or O-1 visa sponsorship requires an employer/employee relationship and the individual must be a Yale employee.
In the H-1B process, the U.S. Department of Labor regulations require that the individual must be paid either the "Prevailing Wage" or the actual wage whichever is higher. Details of this process will be explained further as the OISS begins to work with you on the H-1B process.
