Information for New Scholars

Research Scholars and Professors

The information on this page provides an overview of the immigration steps you can begin work on today:

Accept Your Offer of Employment

You must receive, and accept, an offer of employment or research appointment from Yale before we are able to start the process to issue your necessary immigration documents. Be sure to carefully review all terms and conditions of your Yale appointment. See helpful links under "More Resources".

Yale Departmental Notification to OISS of New Hire

Your Yale Department must submit your job information to OISS. This is done through ISD, our online notification system. You should have been invited to submit biographical data and passport information through this system.

If you are in the U.S. on another visa status please send the department copies of your current visa.

Issuing the Immigration Forms

Your visa sponsorship for your time at Yale will be determined by OISS in consultation with your host department.

Once you have your immigration documentation please review these for biographical and appointment accuracy. Contact OISS for guidance on correcting any errors.

Applying for the Scholar Visa

You must have your immigration document to schedule your actual visa appointment.

Apply early! A list of U.S. consulates is available on the Web. Application instructions for a each type of visa can be found on the embassy Web site. You can view a sample of the visa application (DS-160) here.
