Driving in the U.S.

iconObtain an International Driver Permit (IDP)

Be sure to obtain an International Driver Permit (IDP) before leaving for the U.S. if you plan to drive on the license from your country. An IDP is only obtainable outside the U.S. and can be purchased through a local travel agent or driver’s club. It is a booklet which translates your valid foreign license into many languages, including English.

You are only permitted to drive in the U.S. for up to one year with a valid foreign license and an IDP. The IDP is advised as the best option for DSR and VAR students, as Connecticut will not issue a driver’s license to students in the U.S. for less than 6 months.

If you forget to obtain this permit in your home country, you are not allowed to drive in the U.S. on your home country’s license. You will need to apply for a CT driver's license which can be a lengthly process.
