About the Office of Institutional Research

The purpose of the Office of Institutional Research (OIR) is to provide information for university decision making through a variety of analytic activities, data-gathering tasks, and research projects. OIR reports to and places first priority on work for the Provost, while also working regularly with many others throughout the University. The office engages in factfinding and writes research reports on educational and administrative issues, and makes relevant data available to the University administration, and to the University community when appropriate. The office also serves as a clearinghouse for most statistical information about the University.
OIR was begun in 1971 and currently has 3 research professionals and 2 supporting professionals.

OIR's Information Resource Summary:

1. Factsheet- Brief statistical summary of Yale University, updated annually.

(If you would like a 2-page printer-friendly version of the Factsheet, click here: Printable Factsheet
. Note this file is tightly formatted to fit on two pages. It may not print correctly on all printers.)

2. A Yale Book of Numbers:

a) Ongoing Book of Numbers - A compilation of tables, graphs, and figures, some taken from historical George Pierson publications, others taken from annual statistical summaries prepared and updated regularly by OIR.

3.Common Data Set (CDS) for Yale University -- a collaborative effort among data providers in the higher education community and publishers as represented by the College Board, Peterson's, part of the Thomson Corporation, and U.S. News & World Report. The CDS is a set of standards and definitions of data items rather than a survey instrument or set of data represented in a database.
