Vivian Perlis is an historian in American music, specializing in twentieth century composers. She is widely known for her publications, lectures, and recording and film productions. On the faculty of the Yale School of Music, Perlis is founding-director of Oral History, American Music, a unique archive of oral and video-taped interviews with leading figures in the music world. This important collection of source materials is well known and widely-used by scholars, historians, broadcasters, and producers.
Book publications by Perlis include Charles Ives Remembered: An Oral History (New Haven: Yale University Press, 1974), for which she was awarded the Kinkeldey Prize of the American Musicological Society, and "An Ives Celebration" (Urbana: University of Illinois Press, 1976). With composer Aaron Copland, Perlis is co-author of Copland: 1900 Through 1942 (New York: St. Martin's/ Marek, 1984), which garnered a Deems Taylor/ ASCAP award, and Copland: Since 1943 (New York. St. Martin's, 1989). Her most recent book, Composers' Voices from Ives to Ellington, co-authored with Libby Van Cleve, includes two CDs and is derived from interviews in the OHAM archive. Publications by Perlis include numerous articles and reviews. Among her productions are recordings of the music of Leo Ornstein and Charles Ives, and television documentaries on Ives, Eubie Blake, Aaron Copland, and John Cage.
As Associate Director of Oral History American Music, Libby Van Cleve's duties include interviewing, fund-raising, and working as co-author, along with Vivian Perlis, on the Yale University Press series, "An Oral History of American Music." The award-winning first volume, Composers' Voices from Ives to Ellington, was released in October of 2005. She is also the author of Oboe Unbound, a book on contemporary oboe techniques published by Scarecrow Press and the editor of Bach's Suites Numbers 1 and 3, available through T.D. Ellis Music Publishing, ASCAP.
In addition to her work with OHAM, Ms. Van Cleve is recognized as one of the foremost interpreters of contemporary music for the oboe. She has performed as a soloist throughout North America, and her solo playing is featured on the CRI, Aerial, and Centrediscs CD labels. She performs regularly with chamber music groups including Chez Vees and Burning Bush Baroque. Compact discs featuring her chamber playing have been released on the Tzadik, New World, OODisc, Braxton House, What Next?, CRI and Artifacts labels. Numerous compositions have been written for her, commissioned by organizations such as the National Endowment for the Arts, Connecticut Commission for the Arts, Canada Council, and Minnesota Composers Forum. Ms. Van Cleve has received grants for the performance and recording of new works from the Mary Flagler Cary Charitable Trust, Minnesota Composers Form, Jerome Foundation, and North West Area Foundation. She has been awarded residencies at the Yellow Springs Artist Colony and the Banff Centre, and she won the prestigious Yale School of Music Alumni Association Prize. Ms. Van Cleve received her DMA from Yale School of Music, her MFA from California Institute of the Arts, and her BA, Magna cum Laude, from Bowdoin College. She serves as adjunct faculty at Wesleyan University and Connecticut College.
Susan Hawkshaw holds a Ph. D from Columbia University in musicology with a specialty in the twentieth century and a BA. in French with honors from the University of Rochester. She has taught at universities in the United States and Canada including Columbia, Yeshiva, the Hartt School, Wilfrid Laurier, and Queen's University, and at present is an Adjunjct Faculty member at the University of New Haven and Albertus Magnus college.
She has studied piano at the Eastman School and harpsichord with Kenneth Cooper, was director of church music at various U.S. colleges, and for thirteen years, she was Assistant Director of Choral Activities and a lecturer in music history at the Festival of the Arts in Itu and Fortaleza, Brazil. She has published articles on Jack Beeson, Carlisle Floyd, Sheldon Harnick and others. As Assistant Director of Oral History, American Music she conducts interviews and has published articles about composers including Ezra Laderman.
Deborah Bellmore holds a BA in English with a minor in Economics from Southern Connecticut State University. She has extensive administrative and volunteer experience. She started with OHAM in 1998 and remains as a valuable consultant.
