Shipping/Transport of Hazardous Biological Agents
This course reviews the shipping regulations from the Centers for Disease Control, the Department of
Transportation (DOT), and the International Air Transport Association (IATA). Packaging, permits,
shipping declaration forms, labels, and emergency response are among items that will be addressed.
This is a mandatory course designed to fulfill performance-specific training requirements for employees
sending, transporting, or receiving infectious substances.
IATA requires documentation of shipping training at 2 year intervals.
Please visit the University's training website at: http://www.yale.edu/training to
reserve a seat for a 'Shipping and Transport of Biological Hazardous
Agents' classroom training session.
The training requirement may also be fulfilled by reading the ‘
Transportation and Transfer of Biological Agents’ manual and completing the quiz located at: http://learn.yale.edu/oehs/shipping/ Once you are notified that you have passed the quiz you may ship the materials covered in the manual (i.e. exempt human and animal specimens, category B infectious substances, genetically modified microorganisms and genetically modified organisms, category A infectious substances and dry ice).
Prior to shipping any material, a HAZMAT Shipment Request form must be completed and faxed or mailed to OEHS at 785-7588 or campus mail to: OEHS, 135 College Street, 1st Floor.
A Powerpoint presentation 'Transport and Transfer of Hazardous Biological Materials' used during the training is also available online as an additional training tool and reference. However, the training requirement can only be completed by reading the ‘Transportation and Transfer of Biological Agents’ manual and taking the on line quiz or by attending an in-person training session.
