Radiation badges are issued to persons who will be actively using certain
radioisotopes in their laboratory. The most common isotopes used
in Yale's laboratories are H-3, C-14, P-32, P-33, S-35, and I-125. Other
less common isotopes include Na-22, Cl-36, Cr-51, Rb-86, and I-123. It
is not necessary to obtain a badge if you will only be using H-3, C-14,
or S-35, as the badge cannot detect these low energy isotopes. Also,
you do not need a badge to work in a radioactive material use laboratory
if you will not be handling the isotopes yourself. If you will be
using gamma emitting or X-ray generating equipment (i.e. diffraction
units, irradiators) you should be issued a badge.
Fetal Monitors
If you are pregnant and handle isotopes, you should review the University
Policy titled "Policy Regarding
the Safe Use of Radioactive Material by Pregnant Personnel". If
you choose to declare your pregnancy, please fill out the
Notification
of Declared Pregnancy form. This form will be forwarded
to Radiation Safety and you will be issued a waist/fetal monitor as new,
lower dose limits will now apply. The fetal monitor is exchanged
on a monthly basis. Contact
at 737-2142 if you have any questions.
How to apply for a badge Before applying for a badge, you must have attended the Radiation Safety
Orientation Seminar. Badges are usually issued at the end of each
seminar or may be obtained by filling out the
Request
for Radiation Monitors form . Return forms via campus mail or
fax to Radiation Safety at 785-7588. Changes to badges Changes to your badge (new department, new last name, cancellation, etc.)
can be made by filling out the
Changes/Cancellations form and sending it via campus mail or faxing it to Radiation Safety at 785-7588. When moving to a new lab, you do not have to
get a new badge. You may take the current badge and submit the form
to the Radiation Safety Office. Proper notification of your location
change will ensure that your badge will be included with your
new Principal Investigators group the next quarter.
