Radioactive Spill Procedure

STOP . . . . .what you are doing

  • Do not panic
  • Stay in the immediate area
  • Collect your thoughts and keep calm

PRESUME . . that you are contaminated

  • Do not spread the contamination
  • Do not make any unnecessary moves
  • If feasible, check for skin contamination

INFORM . ..others in the immediate area of the spill

  • Have someone contact Radiation Safety
  • during normal working hours: 785-3555
  • after hours: 911 (Campus Police)

LOCALIZE . . .the spilled material

  • Estimate the extent of the spill
  • Place absorbent material on the spill (wear gloves)

LABEL . . .the area as contaminated

  • Restrict individuals from entering or leaving the area
