Laboratory and Equipment Decommissioning Information

Biological/Chemical Safety Clearances

OEHS will provide Chemical and Biological Safety Clearances for decommissions, renovations, and repairs of potentially contaminated spaces or equipment. When laboratory personnel have removed the hazards from the area or equipment involved a Biological/Chemical Safety Clearance form will be issued. Renovations or repairs may begin only after a Biological/Chemical Safety Clearance has been issued.

Clearance Procedure

Prior to the OEHS clearance inspection the following items must be removed from the affected area:

  • All chemicals and biological materials
  • All chemical and biomedical waste
  • All potentially contaminated equipment, appliances and instruments

It is the responsibility of the laboratory occupants to perform any required decontamination procedures. OHES is available to lend technical assistance when questions arise in this area.
