Select Agents and Toxins

Select Agents are materials that have been identified by the U.S. Government as agents that have potential use in biological terrorism or warfare. The Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS), through the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), and the Animal Plant Health Inspection Service (APHIS), through the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) regulate Select Agents in the United States and its territories. Each agency has developed and will maintain a list of Select Agents, including human, animal and plant pathogens, high-risk toxins of biological origin, and prions. The current list of Select Agents is provided through EHS's web site from the link below and can be accessed at the CDC and USDA web sites (http://www.cdc.gov/od/sap/faq.htm and http://www.aphis.usda.gov/programs/ag_selectagent/index.html). Yale University's policy on CDC/USDA/APHIS Select Agents is provided in Section 12 of the Yale University Biological Safety Manual and can be accessed at this link: http://www.yale.edu/oehs/Documents/Bio/BiosafetyManualSection12SelectAgents.pdf.

I. On Campus Transport

In general, the containment specified by the Center for Disease Control (CDC) (2 leakproof plastic containers inside a rigid outer transport container) will be adequate for hand-carried or local transport. Refer to EHS's "On Campus Transport" form.

Place absorbent material (paper towels) in between the primary and secondary containers to contain any spills. Use shock absorbing material to minimize movement of the secondary container within the outer packaging. Wipe the outer container with an appropriate disinfectant before removing it from the laboratory

Ensure that the package is labeled with the biohazard symbol, the name of the agent, your University address and phone number, and a 24 hour emergency phone number. (For on-campus transport between buildings or campuses use the EHS emergency line 785-3555).

If transporting any biohazards on public roads, please call Biosafety for additional requirements.
