Mission
Statement
Novus – Latin American Association was founded to facilitate
the creation of a new network of prospective future leaders. Members
of the Yale community are encouraged to join in order to create a
diverse group of individuals with different professional interests
but a common goal.
Guided by Yale faculty members the group meets on a regular basis to
analyze and research specific topics of political social or cultural
nature with an emphasis on Latin America. Once the topic has been
analyzed in depth, members meet with a prominent public figure
directly involved in the developments surrounding the topic of
discussion.
Novus cares about both the development of its members as well
as the larger role of promoting Latin America as a key participant
in the Yale community. As part of the foundation activities public
access conferences and functions with the invited guest speaker will
be organized for the benefit of the academic community at Yale.
The organization envisions a program designed to empower its members
with leadership skills as well as to consolidate a wide ranging
network of members to provide a valuable contribution to the Yale
community and to ensure that the organization is able to pursue its
goals well into the future.
Program overview
Novus was founded with the goal of creating a group of
prospective leaders with diverse backgrounds within the Yale
Community. The group intends to take maximum advantage of the
academic resources offered by Yale University; mainly it’s prominent
Faculty and the opportunity to meet distinguished international
Leaders. The organization has defined an academic structure to
foment the dissemination of knowledge regarding the key issues of
interest for Latin America. The next two paragraphs outline a
proposal for the most important activities the organization is
planning.
• Bi-Weekly Work Meetings
The meetings are divided into two sections:
1) Analysis of the topics and conclusions from the previous
meeting. Creation of a short statement to be posted on the
organization’s newsletter.
2) Brief introduction of the next invited guest speaker. The
faculty adviser for the meeting will introduce the topic and provide
the group with an outline of possible research topics for further
research.
• Guest Speakers
The meetings with invited public figures will be divided into two
sections:
1) Overview presentation of the speaker’s contributions and
personal perspectives on the events surrounding the pre-assigned
topic of discussion.
2) Question and answer session with the invited guest.
The main advantage of these discussion groups is to allow for an in
depth analysis of the topic. This discussion format is ideal for the
development of public speaking skills and fosters the creation of
lifelong professional relationships.
