MONTEVERDI'S ORFEO
Saturday, June 14 - 2pm & 8pm

A fully staged production of the first great opera, with dance, costumes, and period instrument orchestra presented by the Yale Baroque Opera Project.

The most popular Monteverdi opera, Orfeo (1607) uses a large orchestra: 2 harpsichords, reed organ, viols, harp, violins, theorbos, trumpets, trombones, cornets and flute. It features beautiful solo singing, duos, trios, choruses, dances, a spectacular overture (an operatic first) and a magnificent closing ballet. The Yale Baroque Opera Project is supervised by Ellen Rosand, a renowned authority on Monteverdi.

The story follows Orfeo, whose musical powers were capable of moving the gods themselves, as he heads into the underworld seeking to rescue his dead wife, Eurydice, from the clutches of the King of Hades.
