On November 13, 2001, the Department presented a panel discussion entitled Arab/Islamic Civilization Beyond the 1001 Nights and September 11. Speakers included: Dimitri Gutas, Religion and Civilization in the Arab/Islamic World; Kishwar Rizvi, Sites of Prayer and Poetry: Shrines in 16th-century Iran and India; Beatrice Gruendler, The Meeting of Cultures in Classical Arabic Literature; Bassam Frangieh, Intellectual Currents in the Modern Arab/Islamic World; and Benjamin Foster, Crises and Arabic Language Study. Discussion was moderated by Karen Foster and Dimitri Gutas.

Iraq Beyond the Headlines
The Department organized a teach-in for the university community on April 1, 2003, entitled Iraq Beyond the Headlines. Panelists included: Eckart Frahm, Bombs Over Babylon: The Archaeological Heritage of Iraq; Siam Bhayro, Christians and Jews in Iraq; Beatrice Gruendler, Institutions of Learning in Iraq; Dimitri Gutas, Baghdad and Islamic Civilization; and Benjamin Foster, Yale and Iraq. Discussion was moderated by Karen Foster.

On October 28, 2003, the Department organized its second teach-in on the situation in Iraq. Panelists included Benjamin Foster, Creating a New Iraq, 1919-1923; Karen Foster and Eckart Frahm, Art, Archaeology, War; Dimitri Gutas, Libraries, Books, Information; and Bassam Frangieh, Reaction in the Arab/Islamic World. Discussion was moderated by Siam Bhayro.

On October 19, 2004, the Department sponsored its third panel discussion on current issues in Iraq. The speakers included James J. Silk, Human Rights Implications of the Iraq War and Occupation; Benjamin R. Foster and Karen Foster, The Murder of Mesopotamia; Catherine Sease, Rebuilding the Iraq Museum; Eckart Frahm and Kathryn Slanski, A New Generation of Iraqi Scholars. The Future of the Global Past

The Future of the Global Past: An International Symposium on Cultural Property, Antiquities Issues, and Archaeological Ethics
On April 14, 2007, the Department co-organized and co-sponsored an all-day symposium that featured eighteen speakers in four sessions on the following topics: Whose Culture? Whose Property?; The Media and the Message; Scholars and Collectors, Laws and Ethics; and Yale and the Past. Departmental participants included Karen Foster, Benjamin Foster, and Colleen Manassa.

   
   
Iraq Beyond the Headlines IV took place on 12 February 2008, with a focus on aspects of the U.S. military's involvement in cultural heritage and preservation in Iraq.  The speakers were Laurie W. Rush, U.S. Army Archaeologist, Fort Drum, New York, and Matthew Bogdanos, Colonel, U.S. Marine Corps.  Karen Foster moderated the discussion.
