Bassam K. Frangieh, born and raised in the Middle East, received a B.A. from Damascus University in 1976 and a Ph.D. from Georgetown University in 1987. His research focuses primarily on modern Arabic literature and its relationship to Arab culture. He has published extensively on modern Arabic poetry and on the Arabic novel. In addition to writing numerous articles in this field, he has authored several books, including Anthology of Arabic Literature, Culture, and Thought from Pre-Islamic Times to the Present (2004) and Al-Ightirab fi al-Riwaya al-Filastiniyyah (Alienation in the Palestinian Novel) (1989).

Frangieh is also interested in literary translation. He has translated the works of several leading Arab poets and novelists into English, including Abdul Wahab al-Bayati, Nizar Qabbani, Badr Shakir al-Sayyab, Hanna Mina, Hani al-Raheb and Haydar Haydar. In addition to his publications in journals and magazines, he has published several books in this field, including Love, Death, and Exile (third printing 2004), Arabian Love Poems (second printing 1999), Sun On A Cloudy Day (1997), and Six Days (1990).

Frangieh, a former boxing champion and soccer professional, has served as a resident fellow in Ezra Stiles College, where he hosts a weekly Arabic language table.
