This elegant guitar is one of the masterpieces of a luthier widely regarded as unsurpassed in perfection of ornamentation. The elaborate marquetry features two large medallions depicting music-related classical themes--Orpheus charming the wild beasts and the contest between Apollo and Marsyas. Nine smaller medallions on the back and ribs show Eros in tableaux celebrating the power and attributes of love.
Label: "Joachim Tielke / in Hamburg / An. 16 (the following digits handwritten) 703". On the back of the instrument at the base of the neck is engraved the name "Tielcke". The back, ribs, and neck are completely covered with marquetry of ivory and tortoise-shell. Overall length 95.5cm; length of body 43cm. depth of ribs 8.4-11cm; vibrating length of strings 66.5cm.
