The Yale School of Music has historically had among the most international student populations at Yale University. Roughly twenty-nine percent of students in the School of Music are international students. This wonderful blend of student backgrounds from diverse geographical locations and varied educational experiences allows for a broad range of opportunities for musical and cultural exchanges of ideas and perspectives.

The School of Music is at the center of this activity, which includes the study, composition, and performance of nearly every type of music. Yale students and faculty present over four hundred public concerts and recitals every year.

The School of Music is a graduate professional school for men and women of exceptional ability who, by reason of their musical aptitude and their general intellectual background, are qualified to do graduate work at this University. At the graduate level, the School of Music offers the Master of Music degree, the Artist Diploma, the Master of Musical Arts and the Doctor of Musical Arts degrees. Students who hold the Bachelor degree or its equivalent by the time of their anticipated matriculation may apply to the Master of Music degree programs. A Masters degree or its equivalent is required for admission to the Artist Diploma and Master of Musical Arts degrees. The School of Music also offers the Certificate in Performance, a three-year program of study designed for gifted students who do not yet hold a Bachelors degree. Students interested in a Bachelors degree program should apply to Yale College (www.yale.edu/admit). The deadline for application is December 31, 2003.
If you are applying from outside the United States, the application process and deadlines are essentially the same for candidates applying from within the United States. All applicants, regardless of degree program must submit an audition tape or CD with their application. Applicants to programs in orchestral or choral conducting should send videotapes. Composers should send scores and CDs. In addition, applicants are required to submit three letters of recommendation, as well as official transcripts from all educational institutions attended. Official transcripts that are not available in English should be translated and officially notarized that the translation is accurate.
All applicants for whom English is not their first language must submit a TOEFL score. A minimum score of 213 on the computer-based exam (550 on the paper-based test) must be achieved before an applicant will be considered for admission.
The Yale School of Music is strongly committed to its need-blind admissions policy, which extends to international students and ensures that that the School is admitting the finest students in the world based on talent and potential for growth. Financial aid at the School of Music is awarded on the basis of need, which is determined in accordance with formulas established by the U.S. Congress. Approximately ninety-two percent of students enrolled at the School of Music receive some form of aid.
A Foreign Student Financial Aid Application, a Certificate of Finances, and an Affidavit of Support must be filed by those international students requesting financial aid. These forms may be obtained at www.yale.edu/music/finaid.html
Completed forms are due on February 28, 2004 for those applying for admission for the 2004-05 academic year.
