1.     President's Note:

Salam Alaikum Everyone,

I'd like to share some good news! As you know, the MSA has been raising funds over the past couple months to adopt an orphan for a year. We're working with Islamic Relief, an international relief and development organization, to provide for a year's worth of food, clothing, medical, and educational needs for an orphan. This Friday, after a tremendous show of support from our community, we reached our fundraising goal! Thanks to everyone who contributed to this worthy cause, and may Allah reward you. We'll be sending the funds this week and hope to receive information about the orphan we sponsored shortly afterwards.

In other news, the results from the survey we sent out during break are in and here's a quick rundown: In terms of social activities, many people indicated that they would like to see an MSA bowling trip, MSA Soccer games, and more chill sessions; on the religious end, there was a good deal of interest in having tajweed, seera, and calligraphy classes; and on the community front, there was a lot of enthusiasm toward helping with the Habitat for Humanity- House of Abraham and tutoring local youth.  Again, thanks for everyone who gave their input. Look forward to seeing all of these ideas implemented if not this semester then early next year.

And on a final note, the MSA website is once again active and updated. We encourage everyone to check it out at yale.edu/msa and give feedback to our Information Coordinator Muneeb Sultan at mohammad.sultan@yale.edu.

Thanks and Salam

2.     Islamic Awareness Week:

Come kick off Islamic Awareness Week next
Monday by attending "Human Costs of the War on Terror," featuring former Army Chaplain James Yee and attorney Brandon Mayfield. The event will take place at the Yale Law School  with a Master's Tea to follow at 4 P.M in Davenport College.

Other presenters will include the editor-in-chief of Azizah Magazine and the host of the Riz Khan Show. Get ready to show your support
NEXT week in order to welcome several renowned scholars, civic and social leaders, and to have a little fun participating in a calligraphy class and modeling in a fashion show. Look for announcements later this week with more details about each event!

3.     Critical Islamic Reflections:

The 7th Annual Critical Islamic Reflections Conference is just a few weeks away! Register online for the conference at www.yale.edu/cir. Hope to see you there!

4.     Halaqas:

Join us every  Wednesday Night  after Isha in the Musulla as we explore the meaning of the Quran and watch and discuss lectures on contemporary issues. Have an idea for a discussion topic? Shoot an email to usama.qadri@yale.edu.

5.     Halal Dinners:

Have nothing to do for Wednesday dinners? Have something to do but want to get out of it? Want to hang out with fellow MSA students in a very low-key, high-chill environment? If so, then come join us for a delicious HALAL dinner, every Wednesday at 6 PM in the Commons Dining Hall. All are welcome! Just bring a fork and plate (kidding -- these are supplied there). A Grad student? No problem. Contact Sameer Ahmed (sameer.ahmed@yale.edu) for vouchers. Food!

6.     Sisters' Tajweed Class:

Attention sisters! There will be weekly Tajweed (recitation of the Qur'an) classes in the Musalla every Tuesday at 6:30 PM and Wednesday at 4:00 PM. Sister Isra Bhatty has been generous enough to offer these weekly classes, so please come, regardless of your reading/recitation level. Please email isra.bhatty@yale.edu if you plan on coming!

7.     Adopt-An-Orphan :

Thanks to the generosity of the community, we reached our fundraising goal this week after only seven weeks of fundraising. We were able to collect $120 in donations at Jumuah this week, which allowed us to meet our goal of $396. We thank everyone who contributed to this endeavor and ask that Allah reward you.

This week, we'll contact our representative at Islamic Relief and transmit our funds to the organization. After they process our donation, we should be receiving a photograph and information about the orphan we sponsored, so stay tuned!

8.    MSA Casual Events:

Every Friday from 6-8 PM , join the MSA for basketball at the Payne Whitney Gym! All people, especially girls, are welcome to continue the MSA's winning streak of 26-1.  (Way to royally screw up that dunk, Harib)

Every Friday , after Isha (8:30), MSA will be having casual events (from ice cream breaks at Coldstone to a quick bite at Aladdin [Umar highly recommends their number 68- that is the philly steak for anyone interested] to movie nights ). So whoever wants to be added to the Casual List to receive updates about these events, share a link with the community, or receive updates about informal get-togethers and activities, send an email to zenah.hasan@yale.edu .
