1.     President's Note:

Salam Alaikum everyone.

Hope everyone is hanging in there during these times of exams and midterms. We have a number of activities planned for this week, but let me just bring to your attention one of them, the MSA General Membership Meeting taking place this Tuesday night at 8:30 pm. Join us for an hour over pizza and drinks as we vote on MSA T-shirt designs, hear your ideas and get your feedback on a whole host of initiatives that the MSA has planned.

 See you there,
-Usama Qadri

2.     General Membership Meeting:

Take a break from the books and join us for our second General Membership meeting of the semester! This Tuesday at 8:30 right after Isha, we’ll be meeting in the Basement of Bingham to vote on MSA T-shirt designs, hear your ideas for events and activities for the MSA to organize, and much more. Want the MSA to sponsor a trip somewhere, think we should impeach Naufil, or have in mind a speaker to bring to Yale? Come to the general Meeting and have your voice be heard! The meeting should last no more than an hour and will feature pizza, drinks, perhaps even live entertainment from our very own Tariq Mahmoud.

Hope to see you there.

3.     MSA T-Shirt Design Contest:

Do you wear T-Shirts? Do you love the touch of soft, smooth cotton on your body? Do you want to be cool? If so, then you should get involved with the MSA's next project! We are now accepting T-Shirt designs for this MSA season and beyond, and we'd love to have your creative ideas. It's very simple. All you need to do is go to http://www.customink.com/ , create your design, and send it to Tariq (tariq.mahmoud@yale.edu) or Umar (umar.qadri@yale.edu). After submission, the General Body will vote on the winning design at the next meeting (tomorrow) and we'll print it for the MSA! That's it. Stay tuned for specific deadlines and dates. In the meantime, though, start thinking!

4.     Halaqas:

Join us every  Wednesday Night  after Isha in the Musulla as we explore the meaning of the Quran and watch and discuss lectures on contemporary issues. Have an idea for a discussion topic? Shoot an email to usama.qadri@yale.edu.

5.     Halal Dinners:

Have nothing to do for Wednesday dinners? Have something to do but want to get out of it? Want to hang out with fellow MSA students in a very low-key, high-chill environment? If so, then come join us for a delicious HALAL dinner, every Wednesday at 6 PM in the Commons Dining Hall. All are welcome! Just bring a fork and plate (kidding -- these are supplied there). A Grad student? No problem. Contact Sameer Ahmad (sameer.ahmad@yale.edu) for vouchers. Food!

6.     Sisters' Tajweed Class:

Attention sisters! There will be weekly Tajweed (recitation of the Qur'an) classes in the Musallah every Wednesday at 4 PM and Tuesday at 6:30 PM. Sister Isra Bhatty has been generous enough to offer these weekly classes, so please come, regardless of your reading/recitation level. Please email isra.bhatty@yale.edu if you plan on coming!

7.     Adopt-An-Orphan :

We’ve just reached a major milestone in our Adopt an Orphan. In this fourth week of  collecting donations, the community gave a total of $45 bringing us to a grand total of $268. This means that we’ve passed the halfway point. We’re almost there everyone! Only $201 keep us from sponsoring a Muslim orphan in the Middle East or Africa!

If you are interested in donating to this worthy cause and can't make it to Jumuah, please leave your donation in the collection box in the Musulla. If that doesn't work, feel free to relay you donation to any of the board members, Homayra, or Sister Shamshad.

8.    MSA Casual Events:

Every Friday from 6-8 PM, join the MSA for basketball at the Payne Whitney Gym! All people, especially girls, are welcome to continue the MSA's winning streak of 26-1.  (Way to royally screw up that dunk, Harib)

Every Friday, after Isha (8:30), MSA will be having casual events (from ice cream breaks at Coldstone to a quick bite at Aladdin [Umar highly recommends their number 68- that is the philly steak for anyone interested] to movie nights). So whoever wants to be added to the Casual List to receive updates about these events, share a link with the community, or receive updates about informal get-togethers and activities, send an email to zenah.hasan@yale.edu .

9.     Islamic Awareness Week:

What do the editor-in-chief of Azizah Magazine, and the host of the Riz Khan Show all have in common? You guessed it! They're both presenters at the 2008 Islamic Awareness Week at Yale. Get ready to show your support during the week of April 7th in order to welcome several renowned scholars, civic and social leaders, and to have a little fun participating in a calligraphy class and modeling in a fashion show.

For more information, or if you would like to help plan events taking place during IAW, please contact Nisreen Hasib at nisreen.hasib@yale.edu.

11.     Critical Islamic Reflections:

CIR is just around the corner! This year's Critical Islamic Reflections will tackle the debate between religious thought and modern reconfigurations of science and technology. "Islamic Thought and Modern Science: Re-Conceptualizing the Debate" seeks to bring Islam to the forefront of a fast-growing area within American academic and political discourse where Islamic thought is largely absent. We look forward to your joining us in April in what promises to be an exciting and provocative conversation!
